Catherine Zeta-Jones Cast In “Rock Of Ages” Movie Musical

The last time Catherine Zeta-Jones was cast in a movie musical, she went home with an Academy Award. So imagine fans glee when the actress was recently handpicked to join Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, and Mary J. Blige in the upcoming movie musical Rock of Ages.

Zeta-Jones — who was recently released from a Connecticut mental health facility for treatment of her bipolar disorder — is in final chats to join the all-star cast as “music-hating villain,” according to reports. Zeta-Jones’ character did not feature in the Broadway version and has been created especially for the film. Director Adam Shankman describes the villain as being the product of a “Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant love child.

“It’s like the musical gods just blessed us,” he quipped last week.

Catherine won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar after playing murderous stage performer Velma Kelly in the 2003 movie musical Chicago.

Rock of Ages, based on the Tony-nominated Broadway production of the same name, follows a small-town girl who travels to Hollywood in the mid 1980s in search of the “big-haired sound.” The movie is a love story told through the music of Pat Benatar, Bon Jovi, Journey, Poison, Twisted Sister, and a host of other artist whose music dominated the era.

Filming begins this summer. Rock of Ages is expected in theaters next year.
